"Opt Out" is used to describe a target or prospect makes a specific action to request no further marketing activity.  This can vary from contact an individual business or their marketing services provider & asking to be removed from their marketing list or by registering with an authorised body such as the TPS to prevent anyone from marketing to them.

Some Opt Out's such as the MPS or Mailing Preference Service are voluntary for all other than DMA members, via their code of conduct however some such as the TPS or Telephone Preference Service are mandatory & backed up by heavy fines for repeat offenders.
